LX(R) is the replacement for the LSD 41/49 Classes; it will be a derivative of the LPD 17 Class.
May operate in an Amphibious Task Force (ATF), notionally composed of five LHAs or LHDs, five LPDs, and five LSDs with an embarked Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) capable of conducting forcible entry operations in a conventional campaign or major combat operation. Deploy overseas as part of a three-ship Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) with LHA or LHD and LPD 17 with embarked Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to provide forward presence and crisis response. Operate independently for engagement operations (such as Global Fleet Station).
Program currently consists of eleven ships. Lead Ship Detail Design and Construction (DD&C) Draft RFP, FY18. Competitive Solicitation FY19. Contract award FY20, delivery in FY26 and Initial Operational Capability in FY28.
