Part 7: Force Protection

Force Protection covers a wide range of programs providing enabling capabilities important to achieving defense in depth and protection for the Marine and the operating forces: Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) programs; Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) capabilities; Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) defense equipment; and Law Enforcement/Escalation of Force (LE/EoF) capabilities. IAMD programs are comprised of expeditionary radar systems and ground-based air defense capabilities to detect threats and neutralize enemy airborne systems. C-IED programs provide common ground unit dismounted capability to detect explosive hazards and mounted engineer capability to detect, engage, and neutralize explosive hazards. EOD programs of record and initiatives consist of over forty capabilities that ensure mitigation of lethal effects via detect, locate, access, identify, triage, diagnose, stabilize, render safe, neutralize, recover, exploit, and dispose of unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO), improvised explosive devices (IED), and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) including Counter-WMD. CBRN Defense equipment includes ocular and respiratory protection, percutaneous protection, individual and unit detection equipment, individual and unit decontamination equipment, and automated hazard prediction modeling. It also provides the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF), EOD, and the MAGTF with enhanced Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) equipment to participate in sensitive site exploitation when hazardous or unknown types of material are present, in the contiguous United States (CONUS) or outside the contiguous United States (OCONUS). LE/EoF capabilities consist of tools for Law and Order Operations and Non-Lethal capabilities. These tools support law enforcement, criminal investigations, U.S. Customs support, police intelligence, military working dogs, Detainee Operations, Identity Operations, and Forensics. Non-Lethal capabilities are explicitly designed and primarily employed to immediately incapacitate targeted personnel or materiel, while minimizing fatalities, permanent injury to personnel, and undesired damage to property in the targeted area or environment.
